    Weapons: Shotguns Empty Weapons: Shotguns

    Shotgun Notes
All shotguns have the same per-shot damage potential, but they use their stats differently. Note that all shotguns will kill with 2 full body shots or 1 partial headshot (eg, 2 or more of the pellets hit the head).

All shotguns are common to the Light Assault, Medic, Engineer, and Heavy Assault classes. Gun and accessory unlocks only need to be purchased once, and will be available to all of those classes. This makes shotguns an excellent purchase overall, and is probably my top recommendation for someone's first big-money purchase.

    Semi-Auto
    Nova (1000)
    Damage: 143x6
    Mag: 8/40
    Reload: 2.6s/4s
    Speed: 275m/s
    ROF: 250

    Thanatos (1000)
    Damage: 143x6
    Mag: 6/30
    Reload: 1.925s/3.5s
    Speed: 275m/s
    ROF: 250
The major difference between these two is in accuracy vs. ammo pool. The Nova can pretty much land all its pellets out to around 6m or so, while the Thanatos can do so out to ~15m. It’s your choice whether this matters to you or not, given how you use it. If you’ve never used a shotgun, note that they burn through ammo like nobody’s business, but it’s also frustrating to be unable to kill someone with a full mag when they’re only a vehicle pad’s width away.

Note that, despite being semi-auto, you CANNOT fire as fast as you can click. You are limited to 250rpm ROF.

    Full-Auto
    Pandora (1000)
    Damage: 143x6
    Mag: 6/24
    Reload: 2.4s/3.8s
    Speed: 275m/s
    ROF: 300
The Pandora is an absolute beast, but it also inaccurate as all hell. Don’t count on hitting a damn thing beyond about 3-4m. Do not buy this if you lack trigger discipline, as you can burn through a full extended mag in around a second. Full auto shotguns have the lowest TTK of any weapon in the game, assuming you can actually land all the pellets.

This thing is almost amazingly inaccurate, but on a Light Assault or in a Bio Lab, that doesn’t matter. Still, expect to die plenty of times to situations where you simply can’t fight back with your main weapon.

    Shotgun Accessories
    Extended Mag
Common to all shotguns, extended mags are a rail accessory that give +4 rounds/mag. This is a huge increase, and is doubly critical on the 6-round mag weapons. This does NOT give additional reserve ammo on its own (eg, a Pandora goes from 6/24 to 10/20). This has an interesting secondary effect: if you use the Ammo Harness suit upgrade (adds 1 mag of reserve ammo per rank), you also get the extra +4 from the Extension (eg, a Pandora with extended mags and Harness 1 gets 10/30 ammo).

    Slug Ammo
This ammunition reduces the damage potential and fire rate of your shotgun in exchange for turning it into a goddamn sniper rifle. Slug ammo is EXTREMELY accurate. 3 body shots or 2 headshots will kill with Slugs. Slugs are also pretty noticeably inferior at close range combat than buckshot, so you need to know what situation you’re getting yourself into. With slugs, it is easily possible to snipe out to 100+ meters, but the shotgun's lack of good optics will hamper you much beyond medium range.

    Foregrip/Laser Sight
These attachments are mostly notable for being more or less useless on a shotgun. The Foregrip requires you be aiming down the sights for it to matter, which has a small amount of utiltiy when coupled with slug ammunition and used at range. If using buckshot, you should really never be aiming down the sights, so the Foregrip becomes worthless. The laser sight is totally useless; it does NOT affect the spread pattern of buckshot.

    Recommendations
Try them all out on your own time. They play very differently. That said, any shotgun is one of the best buys you can make as long as you play to its strengths. Personally, I swear by the Pandora. If you plan to play more HA than LA, you'll probably prefer the Thanatos for its slightly longer effective engagement range.

Per a question I was asked earlier, I've added the following section to the OP's discussion of attachments.

Should Virtia info go into the Vanu Archives section?

Forum archives are always for old, outdated threads.
